SHIZUOXREADER pt15

School the next day is so boring! The only thing remotely interesting that you find out is that there's going to be a festival at the end of the month celebrating the Summer...or something. You decide to visit Shizuo and tell him about it, as Hanako also suggested that she and her boyfriend go on a double date with you and Shizuo at said festival. Hopefully he'll be out of hospital by then.

Shizuo is sleeping when you come in. Trying not to disturb him, you walk across the room, avoiding all the machinery, and sit on the stool next to him. His hand is hanging over the edge of the bed, so you pick it up and gently massage it with your fingertips. This must have woken him, because his eyes flutter open, and that's when you realise how hot and sweaty he looks. His eyelids are purple and a thin sheen of sweat clings to his forehead and cheeks. You stay calm, as this is probably one of the side affects of the painkillers he has forced into him. You carefully place the back of your free hand onto his cheek and Jesus Christ, he's burning up like the wood on a fire.
Just as you take it off, a nurse enters the room and smiles at you pitifully.
'He's not looking too good. He's hardly had any sleep, and, his fever is getting worse.' She says in a soothing and gentle voice.
'What's wrong with him? I thought he only broke his back.' you reply, mirroring the quietness of the nurse.
'Yes, well it seems that there is an infection in part of the tissue surrounding the break. We think this is causing his fever and the reason he isn't responding to any antibiotics we give him.' she says. You don't really understand half of it but you do know what she's trying to tell you. Shizuo is more ill than anyone first thought.
'Isn't there anything you can do?' you ask, trying to hide the worry in your voice.
'....Well, there is one thing we could try...' she sighs and walks over to one of the monitors next to Shizuo's bed. She does something and presses a few buttons. You look at him as he suddenly inhales deeply before opening his eyes fully. You guess she messed about with thing in order to wake Shizuo up and get his approval on what's happening next. He sees you and smiles, squeezing your hand weakly. So unlike the protective Shizuo you know.
'There...is this one thing we could try...but we're not 100% sure that it will work.'
'What is it?' Shizuo asks, his voice hoarse and quiet.
'We can give you an injection between the two disks that you damaged.' she suggests hesitantly.
'There's a catch, right? What is it?' Shizuo asks, somewhat impatiently.
'...It's going to hurt. And we're not sure if it'll work the way we want it too' she replies, flicking through some files she has on her clipboard. Shizuo looks at you and you try to give him a reassuring smile.
'...Should we go for it?' you ask taking his hand in both of yours.
'Might as well. It's not like I'll die if it doesn't work' Shizuo says indifferently. That evil tingling sensation appears in the bridge of your nose and your eyes sting with tears. Shizuo notices the water in your eyes and holds his arms out for you to embrace him. You throw yourself at him, not caring about anything else.
'It's okay, _____! I'm used to pain, so it doesn't matter!' he says and pats your back as you weep into his shirt.
'We'll do it.' He says confidently, looking up at the nurse, but you're sure that he's just as worried as you are.
The nurse leaves for about 10 minutes. During this time Shizuo says:
'Don't worry, I'll be fine. You need to stop getting so upset' he wipes away your tears before pulling you in for a kiss. It surprises you at first, since this is only your second kiss in all the time you've accepted the fact that you're boyfriend and girlfriend, but then you sit down and let him kiss you. He's not desperate like last time, instead he's gentle, and the kiss is sweet.
You pull away as you hear the door reopen. The same nurse enters with a respectful looking doctor.
'This ain't pretty, are you sure you wanna stay?' the male doctor asks with a distinct kansai accent.
'Yeah, she's gonna stay.' Shizuo answers for you. You don't mind, since you would have said the same thing. Another nurse enters with a rather large and mean looking syringe. Your eyes widen. Inside the syringe is a silvery liquid that goes all the way to the top. Under the covers you can sense Shizuo's pulse quicken in fear. The male doctor take the needle of doom and stands at the foot of the hospital bed.
'I know it sounds mean but you need to be awake for the injection' he says, flicking the syringe in a worryingly mad-scientist way.
'I'm joking!' he laughs when he sees the expression on you face 'but I'm not gonna lie, it'll bloody hurt.' he says bluntly.
'Thanks for telling me up straight.' Shizuo says, voice cracking at the end.
The nurse asks Shizuo to remove his shirt, and you can see his abs. You're still a little embarrassed to look at him shirtless, since you're not quite used to it yet. He lays back down on his side facing you and takes your hand. You kneel of the floor to get to his level and rest your head on the pillow so it's like you're both laying in bed. He grins bravely at you before bracing himself as the doctor inserts the needle. His grip on your hand instantly tightens to the point where it hurts and he yells out in pain. Seeing Shizuo like this tears you apart, and tears begin pouring down your cheeks uncontrollably. He relaxes briefly, but then grasps your hand and grits his teeth, eyes squeezed shut, he breathes in sharply and his whole body shakes when he exhales.
'Nearly done now' the doctor says calmly as he pushes the final drops of fluid into Shizuo's body.
'And it's out' he sighs. He wipes the tip of the needle with a cloth, then hands it to the nurse.
Shizuo goes limp and he breathes in and out as if he's just done a 500m sprint. Sweat covers his face and upper body. You sigh and stroke his hair, relieved that the ordeal is over. You lean forward and kiss his cheek, but he still doen't open his eyes.
'It's best we leave him now.' the kansai doctor says, standing by the door.
As you get up to leave, Shizuo grabs your sleeve.
'No...stay...' he manages to choke out. You gasp, then sigh, a smile playing on your lips.
'Stay if you want, babe.' the doctor says and shuts the door behind him.
It's funny, because you're still in your school uniform, and it's likely you'll be bunking off tomorrow.
